Hello everyone. I wanted to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about a new section starting here on TravelNursingBlogs.com, “Ask a Travel Nurse”. This section will primarily be driven by you, the reader. Whether you are just starting your first assignment, or have been traveling for years, everyone eventually runs into a situation or problem where they could use a little advice.
While I certainly have not encountered every situation out there, I have had some rather interesting predicaments in my fourteen years of travel. I have worked in large teaching facilities licensed for over 1000 beds and small rural hospitals that have had a nightly census under 50 (in the entire hospital). I have arrived on assignment to find trashed housing, had contracts cancelled or terminated, worked in facilities facing strikes, and even had the CEO of a major travel company fly me to their home office to discuss ways the company could improve traveler services. Believe me, I’m not bragging; I just trying to illustrate that I’ve had to deal with quite a few unique situations in my years of travel.
Last year I turned my years of experience and love of writing into a how-to book on travel nursing entitled, “Travel Nurse’s Bible (A Guide to Everything on Travel Nursing)”. This year, I am continuing to help those interested in travel with my writings posted on this blog as well as monthly columns in Healthcare Traveler Magazine.
So once again, what would you like to read on this blog? Send me your questions, comments, or even suggestions for topics you would like to see covered here. And more importantly, have fun in your travels!

This is great! I’m very interested in reading more of your posts. In regard to topics, I’m personally interested in hearing how traveler nurses are being received at hospitals these days by employed nurses and other staff at the hospital.
As for reception and tx of travelers, it all depends on the staff. Some are receptive and still there are those who are constantly trying to sabotage your assignment. Some are still very territorial and won’t tell you anything if you asked questions regarding a facility’s protocol for specific things. It is mostly all a very passive aggressive thing that happens and somehow you must look past all that and remember, it is only for 13 weeks.

Hi David,
Im very excited to read your book. The only travel nursing book I’ve been aware of is “Hitting the Road” which I have read twice. I have been in the nursing profession for 4 years and I knew from the beginning I wanted to try travel nursing when my youngest daughter graduated. Well I plan to take my first assignment in Oct. and am extremely excited to learn every thing I can about travel nursing. Any suggestions on where I should take my first assignment? I would love any suggestions from any seasoned travelers such as your self. Im also from Ohio and am looking forward to a warmer winter, LOL!!

As far as travel nursing magazines, there is Healthcare Traveler and several other travel nursing magazine like websites (TravelNursingCentral.com and TravelNursingMagazine.com are a couple I know off the top of my head), that sell advertising, but going through the companies like you are trying is going to be the best strategy for you I think, it just comes down to their needs at the time and their comfort in using you.
And yes there is a travel nurse organization called PanTravelers.
Also, I will pass your info on to our housing people.

I stumbled upon your website and thought perhaps your experiences have also extended overseas. I recently became registered to work in Australia, and after useless performances from the agencies I had signed up with, I took the initiative and went out on my own to contact the various hospitals in the Sydney area. This produced much better results. At this time, I’m looking to meet other travel nurses who have either worked in Australia or currently do so, and what their experience(s) were like. I’m also looking for nurses who need a flat-mate or know someone who is seeking one. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

In response to Jessica, I have not traveled overseas. When I first started traveling back in the 90′s, many places such as Australia actually had quite a few nurses coming over here (to the U.S.) to find work. It seems as if Australia might once again have opportunities for those wishing to work in that wonderful destination.
As far as finding other nurses that have traveled overseas, I would try the nursing forums. As far as finding a roomate (or flatmate as they say other there), try Craigslist. Yes, even Australia has postings on Craigslist.
